There are three important methods to help you select the best quality coarse aggregates.

Sieve analysis – Covers the sampling and determination of the particle size distribution of coarse aggregates.

Length Gauge – Used to determine the elongation index of aggregates.

Thickness Gauge – Used to determine if aggregate particles are to be considered flaky.

If you will look at the Birla.A1’s services provided page, you will get a really good understanding of what all tests are necessary to be done for testing the quality of coarse aggregates. I myself had asked for the assistance of the Birla.A1 concrete engineer and they did a thorough and excellent job of showing me the tests of coarse aggregates and assuring me about what is the best quality.

Cracks are one of the worst things to happen to your home. Thankfully there are a few things you can do to prevent cracks. Apart from using good quality of aggregates and cement, you can avoid cracks by ensuring the below:

Proper mix design of concrete

Sufficient compaction by adopting proper method

Arranging proper formwork for the specified duration with proper supports

Ensure use of proper finishing techniques and timing during finishing operations

Curing for specified time

There are certain things that can cause cracks in your house. Most of these are stuff that should be taken care of in the construction stage. Remember this that cracks very rarely have  an external influence. It’s what goes into the construction phase that can result in your home having or not having cracks. So let’s look at what causes cracks?

1. Excess water in the concrete mix

2. Improper compaction

3. Gaps in shuttering or formwork

4. Over usage of sand or

5. Delay in initial curing

Like I said… all these are things you should take care of when you are constructing your home. So obviously do the opposite of these to avoid cracks. Simple isn’t it?

Planning is more important than anything else. Plan everything smartly before starting any work. Here are few tips:

Find locally available raw materials and labours which would save you transportation cost to a great extent. But do not compromise on the quality of cement or raw materials

Get your labour contractors to sign into an agreement with you. Schedule payments for labour and suppliers on pro rata basis

Have your activity planned from ground breaking till cleaning the interiors. Allocate funds and budget for all the above. I personally found Birla.A1 Construction Expenditure calculator very helpful: https://www.birlaa1.com/calculator/construction_expenditure_calculator.html

Do a thorough study of raw material specifications, grade of cement, concrete mix design etc.

Ensure proper formwork and curing & vibration of concrete

For any home construction, planning is the first and most important step. As a home builder you are on a strict budget. You have to not only think about your home construction, but there are a lot of other expenses that go into the making of your dream home. But just for that, don’t overdo being thrifty with money when it comes to getting your base materials – which are cement, sand, aggregates, etc. Because these are the elements that will ensure the strength of your home in the long run. A good product cement like Birla.A1 StrongCrete is not only reasonably priced but it is known to be good for your home construction.

I have used Birla.A1 StrongCrete for building my home in Mancherial. We had other suggestions of cement but opted for Strongcrete and I am happy with my decision. The masons were also very happy with the concrete workability and it helped in removing formwork fast. I have used it for my whole house and not faced any issues so far. The Orient Cement technical team guided the masons and provided us with a Bhumi Pooja kit before we started the construction which was very special. I personally recommend Birla.A1 StrongCrete for the quality and technical support.

I am currently using Birla.A1 StrongCrete for the construction of my house in Boudha Nagar. So far the experience with this cement is above satisfactory. We just started construction work over the monsoon season and the home building is taking place right on schedule without any hiccups. I guess I will have to keep you posted on the progress once we are done with the initial construction work.
